WORLD WATER DAY

The General Assembly passed a resolution during the UN Conference on Environment and Development, held in Rio de Janeiro in 1992, in which 22nd March was designated as the World Water Day. After it, this day was celebrated in 1993.

Water is an essential part of our life and this day provides us the opportunity to explore more about water issues, sharing them with others, and taking steps to bring some change. Apart from protecting our health and quenching thirst, water also play important role in economic, human, and social development.

Every year on World Water Day, UNESCO’s World Water Development Programmed (WWDP) on behalf of UN-Water release the World Water Development Report which provides the decision-making bodies with the basic framework for the formulation and implementation of sustainable water policies. The annual theme is also correlated with the highlights of the report and the main issues.

When it is celebrated:

The 22nd March is the day to celebrate and appreciate water, learning new scopes and making us realize that it is a very important natural resource and we should use it sustainably.

Water is a very essential part of our life and we should not take it for granted as it gives life to every living thing. In the past, people use to travel long distances to search for water to fulfill their needs so we should treat it as a precious resource and not waste it.

This year, the 2021 theme is “Valuing water”. Apart from the problems of prices, it focuses on the social, cultural, and environmental values water has in people’s life.

Celebrations in 2021:

Due to the prevailing situation of COVID-19, this year it will be celebrated on social media through the digital campaign to have views and comments of people around the globe on the importance of water and what it means to them. The basic reason is to have an understanding of people’s concerns about water and how they have an impact on their lives.
